Chapter 01
What is the US visa officer actually assessing?
The officer has to decide two things in a few minutes: that your trip is a genuine temporary visit, and that you have ties that will bring you back to Pakistan. The State Department says officers look at "the applicant's circumstances, travel plans, financial resources, and ties outside of the United States" (State Department).
Every question below is a way of testing one of those points. If you understand why a question is asked, you will not need a script. You will simply tell the truth clearly.
Our rule: we help you explain your real situation well. We never coach anyone to invent a purpose, an employer, a sponsor or travel plans. A false answer can be treated as misrepresentation, which can bar you from US visas permanently.

Chapter 02
Common B1/B2 interview questions and how to answer honestly
About your trip
| Question | What the officer is checking | How to answer well (honestly) |
|---|---|---|
| Why are you going to the United States? | A clear, believable visit purpose | One sentence with the real purpose: "To attend my brother's graduation in Houston in May." Not a speech |
| How long will you stay? | Stay fits the purpose and your leave | Give your actual dates. They should match your DS-160 and leave letter |
| Where will you stay? | You have a real plan | Hotel name or host's city and relationship |
| Have you booked tickets? | Plans are realistic | It is fine to say you have not; the Mission advises not buying non-refundable tickets before the visa |
| Which cities will you visit? | The trip sounds like tourism, not something else | Name the places you actually plan to see |
About your life in Pakistan
| Question | What the officer is checking | How to answer well (honestly) |
|---|---|---|
| What do you do? | Your occupation and stability | Your role and employer or business in plain words: "I am a branch manager at a bank in Lahore, for six years." |
| How much do you earn? | Income matches the trip | State your real monthly income. Do not round up |
| Are you married? Do you have children? | Family ties | A simple factual answer |
| Who will look after your business or family while you are away? | That life continues in Pakistan | Say who actually will |
About money and sponsors
| Question | What the officer is checking | How to answer well (honestly) |
|---|---|---|
| Who is paying for your trip? | Funds are real and explained | "I am paying from my savings" or "My son in New Jersey is paying for the tickets and I will stay with him." Both are acceptable if true |
| How much will the trip cost? | You have thought about it | A realistic rough figure |
About relatives and history
| Question | What the officer is checking | How to answer well (honestly) |
|---|---|---|
| Do you have relatives in the US? | Possible immigrant intent | Always tell the truth, with their status if you know it (citizen, green card, student). Officers often already know |
| Have you travelled abroad before? | Record of returning on time | List the countries and years. Have old passports with you |
| Have you ever been refused a visa? | Honesty and history | Say yes if you have, and give the country and year. Hiding it is far worse than the refusal |
| Have you applied for US immigration? | Immigrant intent | Answer truthfully, including any family petition filed for you |
For business visitors (B1)
- What company are you visiting, and why? Name the company and the purpose (meeting, trade fair, contract discussion).
- Who pays for the trip, your company or the US side?
- Will you receive payment from a US source? B1 does not allow paid employment in the US; answer accurately.
Chapter 03
What answers lead to trouble?
These are patterns, not secret "wrong words":
- Answers that contradict your DS-160. Re-read your DS-160 the night before.
- Memorised speeches. If a question is "What do you do?" and you recite your whole file, it sounds coached.
- Vague purposes: "Just to see America", "maybe for two or three months, let's see".
- Hiding relatives or refusals. The officer may have the record on screen.
- Answers about finding opportunities, studying or staying on. If those are your real plans, a visitor visa is the wrong visa.
Chapter 04
How should you prepare for the interview?
- Know your facts: dates, address, costs, income, travel history, family details. Write them down for yourself if it helps you remember, but do not memorise sentences.
- Re-read your DS-160. Everything you say should match it.
- Organise genuine documents in a slim folder: passport and old passports, DS-160 confirmation, appointment letter, employer letter or business papers, bank statements, invitation letter if visiting family. See our requirements checklist.
- Practise speaking briefly. Answer the question asked, then stop.
- Choose your language. If you are more comfortable in Urdu, ask the officer whether you may answer in Urdu.
- Families: the main applicant usually answers, but each adult should know the plan.

Chapter 05
What happens on the interview day in Islamabad and Karachi?
- Locations: US Embassy Islamabad visa section, Diplomatic Enclave, Ramna 5 (visa hours 8:00 am–1:00 pm, Monday to Friday, except holidays) (US Mission Pakistan); US Consulate General Karachi, Plot 3-5, New TPX Area, Mai Kolachi Road (US Mission Pakistan).
- Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time.
- Security: bags and electronic devices are restricted. Check the Mission's "What not to bring" page.
- Steps: security screening, document check, fingerprints, then the interview window.
- Decision: usually given at the window. You may be told you are approved, handed a 214(b) letter, or given a 221(g) letter asking for documents or explaining administrative processing. See USA visa refusal: 214(b) and 221(g).
Chapter 06
Who can skip the interview?
Since 1 October 2025, almost all applicants need an in-person interview, including children under 14 and adults over 79 (State Department, 18 September 2025). The main exception is a B1/B2 renewal where your previous full-validity visa expired within the last 12 months, you were at least 18 when it was issued, you apply in Pakistan (or your country of residence), and you have no refusal that was not overcome. The officer can still call you in. Full details are on our USA visit visa guide.
Chapter 07
Frequently asked questions
What questions are asked in a US visitor visa interview?
Officers usually ask why you are travelling, how long you will stay, who you will visit, what you do in Pakistan, who is paying, and whether you have travelled before. Questions are short and the interview often lasts only a few minutes.
How long is a US visa interview in Islamabad?
The conversation at the window is usually only a few minutes, although you may spend hours in the building for security, fingerprints and queues. Arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time.
Can I answer in Urdu at the US visa interview?
You can ask to speak in Urdu if you are more comfortable. Clear, truthful answers in your own language are better than nervous English.
Do I need to show documents at the US visa interview?
Only if the officer asks. The US Mission in Pakistan says the officer may or may not review documents, so keep them organised and answer the question first.
Should I memorise answers for the US visa interview?
No. Prepare by knowing your own facts, not by memorising lines. Rehearsed answers sound false and can contradict your DS-160; officers are trained to notice this.
Who needs a US visa interview in 2026?
Since 1 October 2025 almost all applicants need an in-person interview, including children under 14 and adults over 79. The main exception is a B1/B2 renewal within 12 months of a full-validity visa's expiry, with no refusals that were not overcome.

How Visit Visa Specialists helps
Our interview preparation (Quote on WhatsApp) is a one-to-one session: we go through your DS-160 with you, explain what each likely question is testing, and help you say your true situation clearly and briefly, in English or Urdu. We do not write scripts and we never suggest untrue answers. The consular officer alone decides. The official USD 185 fee is separate (USA visa fee).
