Chapter 01
What does the US Embassy actually require from Pakistani visitors?
The US Mission in Pakistan says there is "no specific list of supporting documentation" for visitor visas. Applicants should bring "whatever documentation they believe would substantiate their position in Pakistan and their purpose of travel", and the officer "may or may not review this documentation" (US Mission Pakistan).
That surprises many Pakistani applicants used to the UK or Schengen. It has two consequences:
- Your DS-160 and interview carry the case. A thick file cannot rescue unclear or inconsistent answers.
- Documents are there to back up what you say. Carry them neatly, in the order of likely questions, so you can show one paper quickly if asked.
Mandatory items
| Item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Pakistani passport | Valid for travel; aim for six months beyond your stay. Bring old passports with previous visas |
| DS-160 confirmation page | With barcode; the form is completed online and cannot be changed after submission |
| MRV fee receipt (USD 185) | Valid 365 days to book; see USA visa fee |
| Appointment confirmation | From the official scheduling system |
| Photo | Uploaded in the DS-160; must meet US visa photo rules |

Chapter 02
What does the DS-160 ask, and what trips Pakistanis up?
The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application. Every answer is signed by you as true and complete. The sections that cause most problems for Pakistani applicants are:
- Previous refusals. "Have you ever been refused a US visa?" also covers refusals years ago and 221(g) refusals. Answering "no" when the State Department's records say otherwise can be treated as misrepresentation under INA 212(a)(6)(C)(i), which can be a permanent bar (State Department).
- Social media. You must list the identifiers (usernames/handles) you used in the last five years on the platforms the form names, including accounts now closed. Passwords are not asked (Visa Lawyer Blog, June 2019). Leaving accounts out makes your answer incomplete, and an incomplete or untrue answer is a reason for refusal. B1/B2 applicants are not in the list of categories the US Mission has told to set profiles to public (US Mission Pakistan), but anything public can be seen. Make sure your online profile matches what you declare (for example, your employer and city).
- Travel history. List your last five US visits if any, and countries visited. Dates should match your passport stamps.
- Who pays. If a relative in the US or a sponsor pays, say so and give their details. Hiding a sponsor is worse than having one.
- US contact and address. Give a real hotel or host address.
- Phone numbers and emails used in the last five years.
Before your interview, print and re-read your DS-160. Officers compare your spoken answers with it.
Chapter 03

Chapter 04
What proves "ties to Pakistan"?
The State Department says officers look at ties such as your employment, your home and your relationships with family and friends, along with your travel plans and financial resources (State Department). In Pakistani terms that usually means:
- stable employment or a running, tax-registered business;
- property or a family home you live in;
- a spouse, children or dependent parents in Pakistan;
- a clean travel history, especially previous US, UK, Schengen, Canada or Gulf visas used correctly.
No single paper "proves" ties. The officer judges the whole picture in a few minutes.

Chapter 05
What should you NOT bring or do?
- No fake or "arranged" documents. Inflated bank statements, fake employment letters or false hotel bookings can lead to a misrepresentation finding, which can bar you permanently.
- No pre-paid non-refundable tickets. The US Mission advises against them before the visa is issued.
- No memorised scripts. Officers recognise them. See our US visa interview guide.
- Check the US Mission's "What not to bring to the interview" list (electronic devices and bags are restricted at the Embassy).
Chapter 06
Requirements for Pakistanis applying from the UAE or Saudi Arabia
The US Mission says applicants should apply in their country of residence or nationality (US Mission Pakistan). If you apply in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, add:
- residence visa page or Emirates ID, or iqama, with good remaining validity;
- employer letter and salary certificate from your Gulf employer;
- Gulf bank statements for 6 months;
- evidence of family and property in Pakistan if relevant.
Chapter 07
Before the airport
After approval, carry your visa, return ticket, US address, funds or card and your leave or business documents. FIA offloaded about 66,000 passengers in 2025, most for insufficient or unverified documents (Dawn, 18 December 2025). Use our offloading checklist.
Chapter 08
Frequently asked questions
What documents are required for a US visit visa from Pakistan?
The US Mission in Pakistan sets no fixed supporting-document list for B1/B2 visitors. You must have a valid passport, a DS-160 confirmation, the USD 185 fee receipt and an appointment; you should also bring genuine proof of your income, ties to Pakistan and travel purpose.
Do I need a bank statement for a US visa?
A bank statement is not a mandatory US visa document, but most Pakistani applicants carry 6 months of statements because the officer may ask how the trip is paid for. There is no official minimum balance.
Do I need to give my social media on the DS-160?
Yes. The DS-160 asks for the social media identifiers you used in the last five years on the platforms it lists. Passwords are not requested. B1/B2 applicants are not among the categories the US Mission told to make their profiles public.
Is an invitation letter required for a US visit visa?
No. An invitation letter is not required, but if you are visiting relatives it helps to carry one with a copy of the host's US passport, green card or visa, so you can answer questions about your host clearly.
How long must my passport be valid for a US visa?
Your passport must be valid for travel. The safe rule is at least six months beyond your planned stay in the US; renew before applying if it is close to expiry.
