Chapter 01
How common are Schengen refusals for Pakistanis?
Schengen refusals are very common for applicants in Pakistan. The European Commission's 2025 statistics show 89,270 short-stay visa applications at Schengen consulates in Pakistan, 45,970 visas issued and 40,026 not issued: a not-issued rate of about 46%. For comparison, the worldwide figure in the same data is about 14.6% (12.2 million applications).
| Country (consulates in Pakistan) | Applications 2025 | Not-issued rate 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Germany (Islamabad + Karachi) | 18,792 | 24.2% |
| Netherlands | 13,108 | 53.4% |
| Spain | 12,296 | 55.5% |
| Italy (Islamabad + Karachi) | 10,809 | 39.2% |
| France | 9,503 | 37.2% |
| Denmark | 5,539 | 78.7% |
| Belgium | 4,987 | 57.4% |
| Switzerland | 4,682 | 50.2% |
| Austria | 2,543 | 73.3% |
| Portugal | 2,300 | 48.0% |
Calculated from the Commission's 2025 consulate data (not issued ÷ (issued + limited-validity visas + not issued)). These figures cover everyone applying at those consulates, including non-Pakistanis, and depend on who applies where. They are not your personal chance, and they are not a reason to apply to a country that is not your real destination (see which Schengen country to apply to).

Chapter 02
What are the official Schengen refusal grounds?
Every Schengen refusal is notified on a standard form with numbered grounds set by the EU Visa Code (Article 32 and Annex VI). The Visa Code Handbook lists them; in plain English:
| Ground | Meaning | Typical cause in Pakistani files |
|---|---|---|
| False travel document | Passport false, counterfeit or forged | Rare |
| Purpose and conditions not justified | The consulate doesn't understand or believe your trip | Vague itinerary; wrong main destination; no invitation details |
| Insufficient means of subsistence | Funds for stay and return not shown | Low or unexplained balance; recent lump sum |
| Already used 90 days in the current 180 | Over the stay limit | Long recent Schengen stays |
| SIS alert | Entry ban recorded by a Schengen state | Past overstay or removal |
| Threat to public policy, security, health or international relations | Objection from a Schengen state | Specific to the person |
| Information on purpose not reliable | Statements don't hold up | Inconsistent answers, sponsor mismatch |
| Doubts about reliability or authenticity of documents | Documents look edited, fake or unverifiable | Purchased bank letters, fake bookings, forged employer letters |
| Doubts about intention to leave before the visa expires | Weak ties to Pakistan | No stable employment, business or family responsibilities shown |
| No adequate travel medical insurance | Policy missing or inadequate | Under EUR 30,000, wrong dates, not valid in all states |
Chapter 03
Can I appeal a Schengen visa refusal?

Yes. The Visa Code Handbook says applicants who have been refused "shall have the right to appeal", and appeals are made against the Schengen state that took the final decision, under that state's national law. The refusal form must give you full information on the procedure, and you must be able to seek review before a court. Deadlines and the body that hears the appeal differ by country; they are written on your refusal form.
In practice, appeals from Pakistan are slow, often need a lawyer in that country, and rarely help if the file itself was weak. They make sense mainly when the refusal is clearly wrong on the facts you submitted.
Germany: the German Missions in Pakistan say the voluntary remonstration procedure (a free request to the embassy to reconsider) was cancelled indefinitely from 1 July 2025. Follow the legal remedy stated in your German refusal letter.
Chapter 04
Appeal vs reapply: which is better?
| Appeal | Fresh application | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decides | Authority or court in the refusing state | Consulate again |
| Cost | Legal fees; varies by country | EUR 90 + service fee again |
| Time | Often months | Appointment wait + about 15 days |
| New evidence | Depends on national law | Yes |
| Best when | The decision is wrong on the file you submitted | Your file had real gaps that you can now fix |
For most Pakistani applicants whose file had gaps, reapplying with a corrected file is the practical route.

Chapter 05
How to reapply after a Schengen refusal
The EU Visa Code sets no waiting period after a refusal (an entry ban in SIS is different). Reapply when you can answer every ticked ground:
- Read the ticked grounds and any free-text explanation on the form.
- Fix the evidence, not the story: longer account history, documented source of funds, stronger employer or business proof, a clear itinerary.
- Check the main destination. If your plans changed, the competent country may change too, but only if the trip genuinely changed.
- Declare the refusal on the new form where asked, and explain briefly what is different.
- Check insurance wording and dates.
- Do not buy a "priority slot" or pay anyone for an appointment; registration is free.
Chapter 06
Can I apply to a different Schengen country after a refusal?
Only if that country is genuinely the main destination of your new trip. Schengen refusals are recorded in the EU's Visa Information System, which all Schengen consulates can see, so applying elsewhere does not hide a refusal, and an application to a country that is not your real main destination can itself be refused for an unjustified purpose. Read which Schengen country to apply to from Pakistan.
Chapter 07
Will a Schengen refusal affect my UK or USA application?
Possibly, if you hide it. UK and US forms ask about previous refusals, and you must answer truthfully. For the UK, not disclosing a relevant fact can be treated as deception under Part Suitability, which for visit visas can mean a 10-year ban. A declared, explained refusal is manageable. See UK visit visa refusal.
Chapter 08
Frequently asked questions
Why was my Schengen visa refused?
Your refusal form ticks one or more standard EU grounds. For Pakistani applicants the common ones are: purpose and conditions of stay not justified, insufficient means of subsistence, reasonable doubts about the reliability of documents, and reasonable doubts about your intention to leave before the visa expires.
Can I appeal a Schengen visa refusal?
Yes. Under EU rules every refused applicant has the right to appeal against the Schengen state that made the decision, under that state's national law. The refusal form must explain the procedure and deadline. Appeals are slow and usually need a lawyer in that country.
Can I reapply after a Schengen refusal?
Yes. EU rules set no waiting period after a refusal, so you can reapply once you have fixed the reasons. Reapplying with the same documents usually leads to the same result.
Can I apply to another Schengen country after a refusal?
Only if that country is genuinely your main destination for the new trip. Refusals are recorded in the EU's Visa Information System, which every Schengen consulate can see, so switching countries does not hide a refusal.
What is the Schengen refusal rate for Pakistanis?
In 2025, Schengen consulates in Pakistan received 89,270 short-stay applications and about 46% were not issued, according to European Commission statistics. Rates ranged widely by country and reflect each consulate's mix of applicants.
Does Germany still accept remonstration against a visa refusal?
No. The German Missions in Pakistan say the voluntary remonstration procedure for visa refusals was cancelled indefinitely from 1 July 2025. Check your refusal letter for the legal remedy that remains.
Is the Schengen visa fee refunded after refusal?
No. The EUR 90 visa fee and any service centre fee are not refunded when a Schengen visa is refused.
Do I need to declare a Schengen refusal on a UK or USA application?
Yes, where the form asks about previous refusals in any country. Hiding a refusal is far more damaging than the refusal itself; for the UK it can lead to a deception refusal and a 10-year ban.
Chapter 09
How Visit Visa Specialists helps after a refusal
We review your refusal form and the file you submitted, explain each ticked ground in plain language, and tell you honestly whether reapplying now makes sense. If it does, we rebuild the file for the correct main-destination consulate. We do not handle appeals in foreign courts; for those we suggest a lawyer in the deciding country.
