Chapter 01
What does every Schengen consulate require?
Every Schengen consulate applies the same EU rules (the Visa Code), so the core list is common. The European Commission lists:
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area (for multiple-entry visas, 3 months after leaving the last country); signed |
| Application form | Completed and signed (Germany uses the VIDEX online form with a barcode page) |
| Photo | ICAO standard |
| Travel medical insurance | Emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation (including death); minimum EUR 30,000 |
| Purpose of travel | Itinerary, invitation, conference or business letter |
| Means of subsistence | Bank statements, salary slips, sponsorship |
| Accommodation | Hotel booking or host's invitation |
| Intention to return | Employment, business, studies, family and property in Pakistan |
| Fingerprints | Taken at submission (some exemptions) |
Consulates add country-specific items, so download the checklist from your main-destination country's official site. The Netherlands, for example, says to use the VFS Global checklist for your main purpose and warns that an incomplete file can be rejected.

Chapter 02
What is the Schengen EUR 30,000 insurance rule?
Schengen travel medical insurance must have minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, be valid in all Schengen states, and cover the whole period of your stay, according to the EU Visa Code Handbook. It must include emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. The handbook says the insurance needs to cover your actual stay, not the full validity of the visa. A host in Europe may buy it on your behalf.
Check before you submit: the policy names "Schengen" states, shows EUR 30,000 or more, matches your travel dates, and covers repatriation. A policy that fails any of these is a standard refusal ground.
Chapter 03
How much bank statement do you need for a Schengen visa?
The EU Visa Code Handbook lists recent bank statements showing movements over at least the last three months as proof of means, alongside salary slips, employment certificates, credit card statements, sponsorship or a prepaid hotel. Consulates judge sufficiency against each country's own daily reference amounts. Pakistani applicants usually submit 6 months with a bank maintenance letter, because consulates want to see a steady pattern, not a single balance.
The handbook also warns consulates that in some countries people borrow cash only to show a balance, and says cash should in principle not be accepted as proof. So:
- Keep the money in your own account for months, not weeks.
- Make sure balance and income tell the same story.
- Explain any large credit with documents (sale deed, maturity certificate, gift deed with donor's evidence).

Chapter 05
Bookings, itinerary and cover letter
Most consulates expect a flight reservation, accommodation for each night, and a day-by-day itinerary. Use real, cancellable bookings and keep them consistent with your insurance dates and your main destination. Never buy fake or "reservation-only" bookings from agents; the Visa Code lists "reasonable doubts as to the reliability or authenticity of the supporting documents" as a refusal ground.
A short cover letter helps: who you are, why you are travelling, where you will stay, who pays, and why you will return. Keep it factual.
Chapter 06
Practical points Pakistani applicants miss
- Sign your passport. Germany's missions say they cannot print a visa in an unsigned Pakistani passport.
- Fingerprints are reused for 59 months. Germany's Islamabad mission has a separate appointment category if you gave Schengen biometrics in that period.
- Translations. Urdu documents (nikah nama, some FRC versions) need translation; check whether your consulate wants certified or legalised translations.
- Apply to the right country. Documents for the wrong main destination are a refusal risk. See which Schengen country to apply to.
- Polio. The EU list does not include a polio certificate; carry your NIMS certificate for Pakistani departure checks if you have one .
Chapter 07
Frequently asked questions
What documents are required for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?
The core Schengen documents are a passport valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, the application form, an ICAO-standard photo, travel medical insurance, proof of your trip's purpose, proof of funds and accommodation, and proof you will return to Pakistan. Each consulate adds its own checklist.
What is the Schengen travel insurance requirement?
Schengen travel medical insurance must be valid in all Schengen states for your entire stay and cover emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in the event of death. The minimum coverage is EUR 30,000, according to the EU Visa Code Handbook.
How many months of bank statement are needed for a Schengen visa?
The EU Visa Code Handbook gives recent bank statements showing movements over at least the last three months as proof of means. Many consulate checklists ask for longer, and 6 months is the safer norm for Pakistani applicants. Check your consulate's own checklist.
Do I need a flight ticket and hotel booking for a Schengen visa?
Usually you need a flight reservation and proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking or a host's invitation. Use real, cancellable bookings. The EU handbook lists a prepaid hotel reservation as one form of proof of means; fake bookings can lead to refusal.
Can a relative in Europe sponsor my Schengen visa?
Yes. The EU handbook accepts proof of sponsorship or private accommodation, using the host country's national form where it has one. Your relative's ID or residence permit, address and finances, plus proof of your relationship, are usually required.
Is a polio certificate required for a Schengen visa?
The EU documents list does not include a polio certificate. Pakistan's own departure rules are separate; carry your NIMS polio certificate if you have one.
Does my Pakistani passport need a signature?
Yes. The German Missions in Pakistan say they cannot print visas in unsigned Pakistani passports. Sign your passport before your appointment.
Do I need to give fingerprints for a Schengen visa?
Yes. Your fingerprints are taken when you submit your application, with some exemptions. If you gave Schengen fingerprints in the last 59 months, Germany's Islamabad mission has a separate appointment category for you.
